First week impressions

After my first full week at the new job, it's been an eye-opening experience.  This is the first time I have been the "new guy" in over six years.  That was a bit scary.  I was extremely comfortable at my old job.  I knew a lot of what was going on.  I had the historical knowledge to easily make decisions.  And I had made good friends with some of my colleagues.

I know I mentioned it before, but it was tough to leave.

So this new office is different.  There are only 12 staffers at my new place.  Everyone knows everyone.  And I am definitely the new guy.  Also, being on the contractor side of things is different.  I think I'm going to like it though.  They really are throwing me right in there.  My first day they put me on a conference call with one of the associations.

Also, working at a privately owned company is DIFFERENT.  It's much more laid back than my last office (to the point where sometimes I hear myself thinking "really?")  On Tuesday around 4pm, my boss (the president) declared it "Wine Tuesday" and anyone that wanted to could gather in the kitchen, have some wine and just talk.  Kind of awesome.

They also do parties, hosted by one of the departments, every month.  Next week is the "Shamrock shakedown" complete with corned beef and a Chicago bartender to make special drinks!  Honestly?  So awesome.

Aside from the fun stuff that the staff does together, I really think I am going to like what my job responsibilities are.  I'm excited to gain more knowledge and really get my hands dirty.
